Do you think it’s acceptable for a dr. (meaning physician) to apply for government funding (NEA) for an artistic endeavor (poetry)? Or does that seem like robbing from the poor to give to the rich?

It sounds like the doctor is exploiting the system. While it’s obviously not illegal…I do find it socially unacceptable. BUT the most disturbing thing is that we have a system that allows itself to be exploited in that way.
It depends, are they akin to Dr. William Carlos Williams, or Dr. Demento?
I don’t see the conflict. It’s an endowment for art, and I’m certain the net worth of the artist doesn’t change it from competing to stealing. As you know, grants are given out on merit – to people who have applied for the grant.
