Leigh Hamilton put out on the Street

I’ve been an XM radio subscriber for a few years now and grown to like a number of channels.  But there was one I really loved: channel 60, Soul Street.  Sirius and XM merged and everything changed about a week ago.

One of the things I liked most about satellite radio is that many of the stations had no djs and few IDs interrupting programming.  BUT Leigh Hamilton was the exception.  Not only was her programing at Soul Street fresh and unusual, but she was a warm presence.  I learned a lot about music from her and got exposed to tons of soul gems I’d never heard growing up in the South.

Partway through the night, she’d create a lovely scenario, inviting guests to her penthouse.  She cued up the slow jams and poured us all glasses of wine.  Leigh Hamilton was what djs should aspire to be, but she was let go in the merger.

The new station in its place, is Soul Town, and I have to say, so far, it’s neither.  It’s too pop for my tastes, and damnit — I miss Leigh.

I wonder how many disappointed listeners are going to cancel their subscriptions.  I’m going to listen a few more months, but I’m thinking it might be time for free internet radio.  And judging from comments around the ‘net, I’m not alone in my thoughts.

Words cannot explain how much I miss Soul Street. I listen to Soul Town but , its mostly 70's music. I miss Dr. Nick , Bobby Bennett and I especially miss the Penthouse every weeknight. That was my "chillout time"!!!Its so hard to find this type of music on the Radio. It seems to be forgotten. I've heard songs that I hadnt heard in 30 years!!! So much variety was played with us "Old schoolers" in mind!!! I'll be on the lookout for more 50's and 60's soul music, the greatest music ever played!!!

Soul Town is no Soul Street. Any nobody compares to Leigh, Bobby and Nick. I grew up in Pittsburgh listening to Bobby and he is one of a kind. The music was the best, the Do Wop, Motown sounds and the Penthouse were truely unique. The stories of the era and the background stories were fantastic! I purchased XM because of Soul Street. Not sure what I am going to do now. Please bring them back!
  • It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since I was “put out on the street.” I miss my friends who stopped by the Penthouse to share a glass of wine and good music. Once again, I am humbled by your comments on Alan’s blog and I would like to thank him for supplying a forum that enables us to communicate. Last week Bobby, Dr. Nick and myself had lunch last week, as always we wonder about our Soul Street family and hope you’re are doing well.

I am glad to report that life is moving in a positive direction. My voice over career is growing and I’ve signed with 5 agencies (www.LeighHamiltonVoice.com), I am developing a syndicated show also looking into webcasting and I entered the ELF Cosmetic modeling contest, the 40+ category (who knows where it will lead). If you want to cast your vote just visit http://www.exploremodeling.com/Contest/Faceof_ELF_2010/15469/Leigh_Hamilton.aspx. You can vote once a day until December 31st.

As you know, these are interesting times which can be overwhelming. It is hard to realize that each day is a gift especially when the news gives us a daily dose of doom and gloom. But each day is a gift, bringing opportunities to share and help each other. My favorite expression is “instead of waiting for the storm to pass, learn how to dance in the rain” and I am dancing with joy and laughing in the rain. Keep dancing!!

    Much love and laughter,
    Leigh

Leigh Hamilton and Bobby Bennett..they are one of a kind...cannot be replaced.

Leigh Hamilton is a DJ icon like none other and Sirius let her and her fans down . Her aproach to playing music as a DJ was simply awesome. Big mistake for those that made the decision, obvisouly this was not base on music because as a person who has spent lots of time listening to music , she is without a doubt the best I have ever heard.

Leigh Hamilton and Bobby Bennett made Soul Street--and the music selection was superb. Soul Town has no soul, too many misses (not hits or tasty jams), and no real sound.

I knew Leigh back in Boston years ago on WVBF. She has only gotten better and better since. Siri-XM should dump Soul Town and bring us all back to the Street...
  • Leigh!!!

OMG.. I was so so sad when I tuned in.. like I did every weeknight and you were GONE! You were my inspiration for those long nights I was still working and sipping champagne in the Penthouse. You turned me on to so many artists that would of never known.. you enriched my music lists and my evenings. Damn!
What was XM thinking when they pulled this plug.. bad move. Please let us all know when you are back... where ever that may be. Soul Street and The Penthouse.. there is just nothing like it and maybe never will be. We want the "original" back!!!!!!

BB was my favorite, and Leigh was my husband's. It's a gender thang. Dr Nick was okay, too, but I was working mostly while he was on, and I just could not get into that "do wop". I learned so much from Soul Street and experienced so many new "old" songs that are now favorites. I'm in contact with BB, and awaiting the return of all 3 to the air somewhere. I've listened to Soul Town, and while it has gotten better since they're using more of the old playlist of Soul Street, it's still not the same. I agree the staff is in way over their heads, sounding very amateurish, but Tonya Simpson is really good. She seems to really enjoy what she is doing. One of the air personalities has the worst voice I've ever heard on the radio. Bring back the real Soul Street!
  • Art Raymond
Amen. Soultown is no XM Soul Street. I miss Bobby B, Dr. Nick, and Leigh Hamilton.

LEIGH, IT WAS HARD TO FIND YOU. SURE HOPE YOU COME BACK. I STILL HAVE NOT SIGNED WITH XM. I CANT FIND ANY BODY TO TALK TO AT XM. WHEN I CALL IT GOES TO SOME PLACE OUT OF THE U.S IF YOU HAVE A FAN CLUB, PLEASE SIGN ME UP. WE ALL MISS YOU VERY MUCH. THE WINE IS NOT THE SAME WITH YOU !!!!! 'O' AND THE MUSIC WAS GOOD ALSO.
  • Reading your responses was humbling and touched my heart deeply. I just discovered this site and was pleasantly surprise with the outpour and outcry of concern, not to mention love. This is my first public comment since leaving XM. I am doing well voicing commercials but I have to admit, I miss being with you in the Penthouse. Thank you for the many years of hanging out on the balcony or in front of the fireplace, sipping wine and allowing me to weave a musical quilt of love.

Bobby Bennett, Dr. Nick and myself are still family and talk almost daily. Don't be surprise if you hear us on the internet!

    Much Love and Joy,
    Leigh Hamilton

I totally agree with you comments about the lack of consideration for the listner - I understand the need to adjust to the economics of the time - I gave it a couple of months. Now FM sounds good but this is not what I paid for. I want my money back!!!
  • Hermanese
I am so disappointed. I love Leigh Hamilton. My husband and I would have such a fun time each evening listening to her and the songs she would play; some new to us, some for a stroll down memory lane. Leigh and Bobby were the reason I had to listen! If you're interested in the bottom line and I know you are, then you need to get those guys back. It is not the same and I too may leave Town, Soul town that is!

I MISS THE CREW THIS NEW STA.REALLY SUCKS

We enjoyed listening to Leigh, Bobby Bennett and Dr. Nick. Soul Town can't come close to what they had and let go. What will it take to get them back? The merger screwed up a good thing!
  • Walter Roberts
What a personality! No other radio personality made me feel so warm. I miss Leigh's informative chats Glad to see I am not the only one who feels this way. Leigh was the best DJ on any radio program. I am ready to cancel my XM subscription. Soul Town is nothing but warmed over WRKS -KISS. I can't take any more of "the fox that rocks the box" or Ken "Spider" Web. Grow up guys....
Leigh where ever you are let us know. I miss the "Penthouse". There are a lot of us who would pay to get you back on the air.
  • Jim Carr
Big misstake for Sirius to let Liegh Hamilton and the Penthouse go. Leigh made "Soul Street" what it was. Soul Town does not come close to the programing that was on Soul Street. The Penthouse was the program that I looked forwarded to. Leigh was what everyone needed at the end of the day. Since she has gone I don't listen anymore.
  • peggy green
I miss leigh, bobby, and dr. nick that station you now refer to as soul town that is just what it is, right out of the 70's. the music the play is bull sugadiy. YOU PEOPLE NEED TO GET WITH PROGRAM AND REMEMBER SOMETHING IF IT IS NOT BROKE DON'T FIXED. IF YOU MERGE WITH SIRIUS AND WHAT YOU NEEDED TO DO WAS ADD SOUL TOWN AND THAT OTHER STATION THAT WAS ONCE SUITE 62. YOU PEOPLE HAVE GONE MAD AND MONEY CRAZE. I WISH YOU ALL THE LUCK IN THE WORLD. I DO NOT LISTEN TO SOUL TOWN I LISTEN TO THE GROOVE AND PLEASE DON'T TAKE THAT OFF. PLEASE BRING LEIGH, BOBBY AND DR. NICK BACK.

Soul Street is not the same sans Leigh Hamilton, Bobby Bennett and Uncle Nick. I miss them and their insights and memories. Just like everything else in the corporate world, a good thing is messed up.
  • Wil
Miss Leigh was great, I miss her.....
  • MsJazzyPTCruiser
Miss Leigh Hamilton --heck YES. I looked forward to her Penthouse EVEY week night. She came on as soon as I got off work and she was my company all the way. The wine, the fire place and valet parking for the 18 wheelers and the balcony...there was nothing that can compare to her show. Not to mention Pot Luck Wednesdays with the BB and Dr. Nick.
    Cancelling my subscription.
If I wanted to listen to the 70's and 80's I'd go to my childrens houses. Soul Street "class act and limited talking", Soul Town "sad imitation" and ALL the DJ's talk to gad-gone much!
  • Bob
It is really a travesty that we cannot locate Leigh Hamilton. She was so informative and not to mention extremely sexy ! I would like to know wher she ended up as well as how to best express my disatifaction with losing her along with Bobby Bennett.
  • rolph and debra
we totally agree - why in the world would you let one of your premier personalities go - if anyone knows where she has ended up, please let us know so that we can follow her to the new destination - which I hope will be on an internet radio station - or perhaps we should all pool together and start one!
  • KW
I completely agree!! In fact, I just sent an email to XM informing them of my opinion on the subject. I, too, learned a ton from Leigh Hamilton (and Bobby Bennett) and am upset to turn on the radio and hear the electronic era of soul more than the roots of the genre.
I'm glad to know I'm not alone in my opinion. Hopefully something will be done soon to improve the current state in which the Street was left.

    Radio is so 20th century...
