Leave it to a bunch of librarians to come through when one puts out a call for a micro-cassette player. Bob — who’s not only a librarian, a historian, and an opera scholar — let me borrow his, battery included! I kept trying to digitize the tape, a leftover from my answering machine in the 1990s, but had a feeling I was doing everything right and that my cable was the problem. Biked over to Radio Shack, bought a new cable, and minutes later, I extended the life of some old memories. I only expected one voice on the tape (click below to listen and guess who). What I didn’t expect was
- my own outgoing message
- my mother-in-law, sounding younger and more cheerful
- an ex-friend, who no longer speaks to me, describing her chicken, Becky’s new home
- the former neighbor who looooved to talk
- another ex-friend who participated in a harassment campaign against me and my wife
- a friend of K’s I’ve never met and
- sadly, my bird and a human friend, who’ve both died
MYSTERY VOICE (requires a password. hint: my favorite tree in all lowercase letters)
