In Mexico City, Cafe de Tecuba is really quite cute and has yummy food. A friend's father who lives there took Dana and me there way back in college when we were visiting. Nearly 15 years later, we accidentally found ourselves at the same restaurant. Friea's home museum in Coyoacan (sp?), as well as the house she shared with Diego Rivera, are pretty interesting.

Thanks everyone! Rose, I'll be on the lookout if I end up in Oaxaca. I did see the tragic end to a single cochineal last year. Amazing!

Kevin! Thanks for this great info. Nicauragua (and all of Central America) is so appealing to me right now. And Oaxaca City was a paradise -- no one would ever have to talk me into going back. Hard to believe it's January already. Cheers.

Hi Al, If you want real heat and bang for your buck you might consider Leon, Nicaragua.
My friend Gerald Pavon runs a tour business in Leon. He runs volcano tours, beach tours. I took a 3 day coffee country tour with him, in the cooler mtns of the north of the country. Here is a link to his site, he has contacts at language schools, too.

If you return to Oaxaca City, I've done Spanish immersion classes at Amigos del Sol. http://www.oaxacanews.com/amigosdelsol.htm
Rogelio, the owner will find a homestay for you.
Sounds like you are going on sabbatical, Enjoy!
